Council Member Burchfield was absent. All other members attended, and all votes were unanimous.
- City Hall streetscape
Approved final payment for the project. The total cost was about $715,000—well below the $850,000 budget. - Justice Department grant application
Agreed to apply for a grant to support local law enforcement. As in past years, Shawnee will partner with three other Johnson County cities. If awarded, Shawnee Police plan to use about $17,000 to purchase pedestrian barricades for City events. - Design and Construction manual update
Clarified that 2022 stormwater standards will be enforced. Updates adopted regionally in 2025 had raised technical concerns, and several nearby cities have delayed implementation. - Stormwater project at Johnson Drive and Monticello
Approved a contract for pipe replacement. Costs will be split evenly between the City and the Johnson County Stormwater Management Program. Work is expected to begin in mid-May and finish by mid-September. Occasional lane shifts will be needed, but both roads will remain open.
Discussion of the 2027 budget began in earnest. Shawnee has the fewest employees per capita population of our four comparable cities in Johnson County. We also have the second lowest expenditures, per capita, revenue per capita, and mill levy of those cities. There are no more easy budget cuts left.
